Informatica Focus Day: Master Data Management – Data centricity and new business models

28 April 2017
Who needs digitization? This was one of the main issues discussed at the “Informatica Focus Day: Master Data Management“.

Roger Kehl, CIO at Festo and one of the speakers at the Focus Day, identified the vast amount of data that has to be managed by companies as a key driver of digitization. The Internet of Things, “intelligent products”, additional apps for specific products, digital services: for many manufacturers, software expertise has become a necessity and an essential component of value creation.

This entails entirely new challenges for dealers and manufacturers: They have to acquire the necessary software expertise and develop new business models. It’s not only about how these new digital products can be sold; cooperation with partners on the market offering their products has to be considered as well. “It’s a race,” says Mr.Kehl, either the industry learns how to provide IT or IT providers such as Google & Co. learn how to manufacture goods.

Customer Journey is another driver of digitization: The customer should be able to buy Festo’s products as easily as possible. This is also one of the guiding principles of Jan Rüger, IT department manager for the sales area at INTERSPORT. He even goes a step further: As an internal service provider his aim is to make it as easy as possible for his colleagues to collect, maintain and use data. To this end, INTERSPORT relies on the experience of an external team of consultants, Informatica Product 360 and a solution that is as close as possible to the standard product, with a high degree of automation.

Mr. Rüger is convinced that involving your employees is also a key success factor. “If you want projects to be successful, you have to be close to the people,” he said and emphasized the importance of constantly keeping in touch with your colleagues – not only when introducing an MDM/PIM platform. You can only optimize the use of a tool and exploit its full potential if you all work together to that end.

Hannes Schmidt, Senior Consultant at CDQ AG, a spin-off from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland, pointed out that risk management, efficiency of a company and Mergers & Acquisitions are also important drivers for digitization.

All presentations clearly showed that data, master data and product information management will become more and more important. Customer centricity is impossible without data centricity.

The Informatica Focus Day was certainly a success: It included top presentations about Master Data Management and excellent presenters. Participants had a lively exchange of ideas, both at the network-event on the eve of the conference and at the Focus Day itself, that perfectly complemented the presentations and helped get useful insights and suggestions.
