The difference between being green and being green
Have you ever recognized those small patches or signs in hotel rooms telling you to only drop your towels on the floor if you like new ones and that you should consider the environmental impact before doing so? I guess you have, since they seem to be part of every hotel’s basic equipment. The idea behind this is a very good one, guests staying longer than one night could help saving natural resources, water etc. (and by the way help the hotel reducing its cleaning cost), so how come I seem to not like that idea? Well, most of the staff does not seem to be up to that idea of ‘being green’. Whenever I leave towels hanging on their respective hooks, I find new ones in the evening and the used ones gone. Of course, there are exceptions where the towel is still present – but then a new one usually has appeared as well.
So what happened here? The management of the hotel probably made a decision to save some cost and appear eco-friendly as well but they forgot to involve their staff in sharing this idea. And what is the issue in that? The customers will notice easily, and they will not believe the message the hotel is trying to communicate to them.
Conclusion
So, if you put up a claim, make sure all stakeholders are up to it! Make sure, you and your employees ARE actually green and do not just pretend to be – your customers will notice, appreciate and honor this. Do not try to be something you are not and do not blindly follow trends without living to it.
