The fundamental key to success – employee participation in the requisition process

13 November 2020
Ida Lorenz
Data management is considered one of the essential disciplines of digitisation and is becoming increasingly important. Master data and transaction data are the backbone of business processes, but the lack of specialists, inflexible business processes, stiff organisational structures and unclear responsibilities get in the way of comprehensive strategic data management.

The difficulty in strategic data management is not the technology, but the organisation of different requirements for processes and data in different departments. While the IT department is interested in a transparent and holistic data structure, the business departments of the operative business want to achieve quick success and have access to reliable information - without manual data checking and correction routines in daily business.

Our experience from customer projects shows that there is often a lack of mutual understanding and therefore there is always friction between the IT department and the various specialist departments - from which data management suffers.

On the other hand, data management suffers from isolated solutions as well as from a workaround. It is not target-oriented if business departments and IT work past each other to achieve their own goals. Companies can only work competitively and efficiently if all relevant parties understand the mutual business factors and motivations behind the journey into digital transformation.

Only when the operational departments clearly define what information and what benefit they derive or would like to derive from the available data, data management strategies can then be appropriately defined, optimised and implemented by IT in a beneficial way.

"What are your digitisation goals?" is a seemingly simple question. But how can the many and varied answers of those involved in a company be incorporated into a company-wide data strategy in order to achieve long-term corporate goals? A scoping workshop with our strategy consulting specialists helps to embed these answers into a company-wide approach through a multi-stage procedure. Selected interview partners from relevant business areas and the IT department create a content weighting of your data strategy modules under guidance. The focus is always on sustainability and competitiveness.Henrik Kramer, Managing Consultant in our Strategy Consulting Team, summarises in the following video (short and compact) how digital companies ultimately benefit on several levels when they turn those affected into participants. And therefore, adds another aspect to our video series "Data Strategy: Various Angles – Common Goal".

Do you need further information and would like to learn more about our product „Business Driven Scoping“? Then you are welcome to contact us.

We see professional data management as a means to an end. Our goal is the competitiveness of your company.

Data help in making decisions. Data are the basis for process transparency and efficiency.

And finally, it fulfils legal requirements - without successful data management this is usually not possible.

Data management is always in the context of your specific organisation. Your corporate strategy provides just as important input as your objectives for digitisation. To align the data strategy with this framework we have developed a modular procedure.

With the help of canvas-based tools, business and data domains are evaluated, data customer and competitive relationships are recorded, evaluated for current maturity and future importance, prioritised and quantified.

In this way, data management becomes operationally effective - and pays off at the same time for your business objectives.
